It's amazing how creative humans are in devising ways to torture themselves in the name of physical fitness. So, could I interest you in orienteering?
Upon first hearing or seeing the word, you might think the activity has to do with the Orient. Not so. The word comes into English from the Swedish orienteering and both share the Latin root oriens: having to do with the "east" or "the rising sun" and now used to mean "finding one's place."
Now, with geography and etymology out of the way, just what is orienteering? It's a sport that combines brains and brawn, although aficionados insist that "easy" orienteering is a possibility. To orienteer, you must have the following: a terrain or "course" of varying levels of difficulty, a detailed map of this course, and a compass. So immediately you can surmise correctly that the sport is somehow tied in with navigation. The idea is to traverse this course using the map and the compass and prove that you have visited various "control" sites that are defined by clues on the map. If intelligent navigation or luck works out, you come upon the flag that identifies the site. To prove that you have indeed come upon the site, you punch a control card you carry. To add further challenge, how you get from site to site is up to you. No road signs prevail, and your true mettle as an orienteer lies in your skill in completing the course in an efficient and therefore timely fashion. If you get bored with this ordinary garden-variety hike, you can always try ski-orienteering. Any volunteers? Don't all step forward at once!

Driving a car safely takes focus, and Chief Constable Johnson views mobile phones as yet another distraction that can take away focus and potentially lead to an accident.
The Chief Constable, who also is the department's accident reconstruction guru, doesn't have statistics that show the role that mobile phones play in accidents because there is a large amount of underreporting.
A recent survey of 500 people indicated that half of those questioned had seen unsafe driving caused by other drivers talking on mobile phones ,More than 90 percent felt the practice was either "extremely dangerous" or "somewhat dangerous."

Since 1921, the primary purpose of the contest has been awarding money and prizes to young women in America to further their education. The first Miss America was Margaret Brown, a resident of Washington, D.C. In 1959, the organisation added the talent portion to the competition.
Today, the organisation has franchises in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. There are over 80,000 contestants each year who are collectively awarded more than $29 million dollars. They are judged in the categories of talent, interview, physical fitness, and poise and personality in evening dresses.
Aside from demonstrating abilities on stage, a big development in the programme in recent years has been the emphasis on volunteerism and public service. Each Miss America contestant must have a platform and must spend many hours in service to that platform as a volunteer in her community or state. upon winning a title, each new queen will have a one-year reign during which she represents her town and state as a spokesperson and a champion of her chosen cause.
